Chapter 2
In chapter two the book talks about miscommunication in an organization. So much time is wasted in organization by miscommunication. People do not take into account that what a word means to us may not mean the same thing to someone else. Our cultural and socio background shapes our language. If we look at it in theory, take the word love for example, if you were raised by someone teaching you the word love by hugging and cuddling, you are going to have a totally different interpretation than of someone who was abused and associates the word love with abuse. Language and communication is a learned ability. The person who was abused now has a warped image of the word love.
To make sure that the receiver has received the message from the sender, they must give feedback. Feedback ensures that the receiver has properly decoded the message. "Communication is on going, even if words are not being exchanged (text, p. 19).” To reinforce the message that the sender is sending, they should use non verbal communication. Something as little as hand gestures lets the receiver know the meaning of the message.
We communicate with others to “stimulate meaning.” If we didn’t have language how would we communicate? Human beings must learn a language with shared meanings in an organization, in order to communicate effectively with one another. Through communication we are able to reach our desired common goal.
